Federal authorities have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and potential further challenges.
